The art of photography can be complicated and requires a certain degree of natural talent along with some additional training. Not to deter you off your course, obviously, but any photographer worth his or her salt must be more than willing to practice a few new tactics to use out there when snapping photos.
To improve your photographs, try playing around with the shutter speed on your camera under a variety of different shooting conditions. You can either capture a precise moment or use a higher exposure to blur together a period of time. Lighting quick shutter speeds are great for sports shots with lots of action, while slow shutter speeds are nice for landscapes without a lot of movement.
Direct Sunlight
Most people think that beautiful days filled with sunshine are ideal for taking photographs. But, in fact, filming in direct sunlight is a sure-fire way to ruin just about any photographic image. Downsides to direct sunlight shots include glaring, awkward shadows, uneven highlights and human subjects squinting if they face the camera. If you can, take outdoors pictures early in the day or toward the evening.
An important factor in photography composition, is framing. Zoom in on your subject and eliminate any surrounding distractions. Your subject should fill the frame to add the most impact to your photo, avoiding clutter.
Do not allow your camera batteries to run low because you never know when a photo opportunity will occur. Digital cameras use up a large amount of power, particularly when you’re using an LCD screen. Therefore, you should ensure your batteries are always completely charged prior to using the camera. If you’re really dedicated to always being ready to shoot, bring along an extra set of camera batteries.
The more pictures that you take, the higher your chances will be for getting some great shots, so make sure you have a memory card that will hold a lot. You don’t ever want to be in a position where you run out of memory on the card, so by having a lot of space you never need be concerned about this happening. A further benefit of using large memory cards is that photos can be taken in RAW format, and this gives you a lot of options when it’s time to edit them.
You are permitted to move your subject in order to discover a unique shot. Explore different positions relative to the subject. For example, shoot the object from above, below or at an unusual angle.
When your perfect shot is in view, stay still and hold your breath when you push the shutter. Even if you move the camera a little, it can ruin the photo. Catch yourself before you press the button: hold the camera still and wait to take a breath until after the shot is taken.
By following these tips, you’ll be on the right path to becoming a professional photographer. A good picture requires more than a point and shoot camera. It is about capturing the art already present in the world around you and forever immortalizing it.
