When did you travel into the artistic world ??

My Mother gave me a Kodak Pocket camera when I was Eleven years old and I never look back ever since. I fell in love with the idea of preserving what I was seeing, and it was about the beginning of my love affair with photography. From that moment forward, I began documenting, photographically, the activities of my family, as well as the community surrounding me.

What is your plans for the future??

I’m in the process of choosing photographs for my first book publication at the moment and I’m still searching for additional funding or sponsorship for the completion of the book. This journal contains a journey of expression through out the Indonesian archipelago and hopefully it can take the viewers to their own journey of imagination.

Name 3 people that has been your inspiration?

The Three Masters that have influenced me are: Michael Kenna for showing us that art of simplicity, Ansel Adams for his ingenious method called the Zone System and Michael Levin for his artistry of creating the surreal using long exposure technique.

Tell us about your artwork – What thoughts you have when you work?

Photography is personal. It is a tool to communicate and conveying a message in Black and White photography is the true purpose in life’s journey of expression.

The process starts with lighting. The light that I’m looking for is a bright and contrast light. Proper contrast will bring tension as well as harmony; it is an essential ingredient that makes photography speaks with emotion. I always love Ansel Adam’s work. The zone system is knowledge and discipline to achieve the perfect photograph by controlling the tones and contrast in order to gain a certain mood or nuance. This awareness of an image’s contrast is an element I consider in every photograph I take.

Composition comes next; most of the time I’m inclined to angle that illustrates simplicity. Like Michael Kenna, I’ll try to communicate, “ Less is more”.

How often do you make your art?

My day job is a freelance videographer, but during spare times I always find times to travel around the island and pursue my passion. I am very fortunate to live in Indonesia because we have approximately 17,000 islands with great marine biodiversity. So many place to travel, I doubt if I can visit all of them in my lifetime.

Did you exhibit your work somewhere?

Up to this moment, I did two group exhibitions in art galleries in my hometown, Jakarta and a plan to have an exhibition at least once a year to touch bases with the community.

What is your biggest dream ?

My biggest dream is to have an integrated photo gallery somewhere in the village of Ubud in Bali Island. I love to collaborate with international photographers in the context of photo festival and exhibition to help socialize and improve the art of photography in the community. It is important to base this activity solely on the people that live on the surrounding area that is the reason why promoting and introducing local talent should be high on the agenda since our livelihood depends mainly on the new talent of the younger generation. It is also a palace to meet, share, get inspired or just enjoy the simple pleasure of making a good photograph.
